Allied Arts real estate sits closer to downtown Menlo Park than almost any other residential neighborhood in the city. That alone would make it desirable. But Allied Arts also has the Guild, a 1929 Spanish Colonial artisan village with courtyard gardens, working artist studios, and a lunch cafe, still operating today, still raising money for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. That history gives the neighborhood a creative, slightly bohemian undertone that you don't find elsewhere in Menlo Park. Add Craftsman bungalows, a pedestrian bridge to the Stanford Shopping Center, and walkable access to Santa Cruz Avenue, and you start to see why turnover here is so low.
The prevailing style is Craftsman bungalow. Covered front porches, wood siding, period millwork, built-in cabinetry. These are the kind of details that cost a premium to replicate, and they come standard in the original Allied Arts housing stock. You'll also find ranch homes from later decades and some recently built or substantially remodeled properties.
Lot sizes run moderate by Menlo Park standards. Smaller than Felton Gables or West Menlo Park, but better positioned for people who want to walk to dinner, walk to the farmers' market, and walk to Stanford Shopping Center without getting in the car. A few small apartment buildings and multi-unit properties exist near El Camino Real.
Local Tip: Original Craftsman homes with intact period details are getting harder to find on the Peninsula. When one shows up in Allied Arts, it attracts buyers specifically looking for that architectural heritage. Don't wait to tour it.
Inventory is limited and turnover is low. When a home does list, expect competition.
The Allied Arts Guild is unlike anything else in Menlo Park. Delight and Garfield Merner bought 3.5 acres in 1929 and commissioned architect Gardner Dailey to build a Spanish Colonial arts village inspired by their travels through Spain. Nearly a century later, it houses about 20 artisan studios and shops, set among tile-paved courtyards with fountains and climbing wisteria. Cafe Wisteria serves lunch Tuesday through Saturday. The Guild's proceeds benefit Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.
Downtown Menlo Park is steps away. Santa Cruz Avenue has:
Thirty-five-plus restaurants and cafes total. You can try a different spot every week for months.
Stanford Shopping Center is across a pedestrian bridge over San Francisquito Creek. Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, Apple, and dozens of restaurants. Few neighborhoods in Menlo Park can say you can walk to both a small-town downtown and a premier regional shopping center.
Schools in the Menlo Park City School District:
The district has a strong reputation and high parent involvement.
Parks include Fremont Park within the neighborhood and Burgess Park's full athletic complex in neighboring Linfield Oaks, a short walk south. The San Francisquito Creek trail runs along the western edge.
Commuting is manageable. Caltrain's Menlo Park station is close by. El Camino Real connects north and south. Highway 101 is a short drive east.
A historic artisan village founded in 1929 in Spanish Colonial style. Courtyard gardens, artist studios, retail shops, and Cafe Wisteria. It's still a working creative space, and proceeds support Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.
Yes. Allied Arts is one of the closest residential neighborhoods to Santa Cruz Avenue. Most residents reach restaurants, shops, and the farmers' market in under 10 minutes on foot.
Primarily single-family. Craftsman bungalows and early California ranch homes are the most common. Some small apartment buildings and multi-unit properties exist near El Camino Real. The early 20th-century architectural character is strong.
Both have pre-war housing and walkable streets. The Willows is south of Allied Arts, separated from Palo Alto by San Francisquito Creek, with pedestrian access to University Avenue. Allied Arts is closer to downtown Menlo Park and the Guild. The Willows has more concentrated 1920s Craftsman character. Allied Arts covers a slightly broader range of home styles.
A pedestrian bridge crosses San Francisquito Creek and connects directly. It's one of the few neighborhoods in Menlo Park where you can walk there.
